The diary dates from 1 Oct. 1777-28 Feb. 1778; 1 Nov.-11 Dec. 1778; and 25 Jan.-14 Apr. 1780 and records service in the defense of Philadelphia and in the Philadelphia-Monmouth, N.J. area, including engagements at Fort Mercer (Red Bank), N.J. and Fort Mifflin, Pa. (1777-78); at winter quarters at Valley Forge (1777-78); in Rhode Island (1778); and in the Elizabethtown area of N.J. (early 1780). Topics discussed include troop movements and encampments, intelligence reports on the British, news of other engagements, orders, court-martials, and visits to the sick and wounded.
